Where have all the flowers gone?

‘No flowers’, said the notice, ‘Donations to Cancer Research’.

They never forgave her for taking that holiday, rarely spoke after the child died.

‘Only thinks of herself’, they opined, so they left her alone with those thoughts.

Her heart stopped soon after.

  1. “never forgave,” “rarely spoke”–so sad. I love the rhythm you create with the longer sentences on top, then the short, harsh ending line.

  2. People are quick to judge others when it comes to grieving: too much or too little. I think “they” is people at work, I can’t imagine family members would leave the “her” alone.
